Sports and Spokes Program - Priceless

Dylan

A letter to Bloorview Kids Foundation from Dylan's mother.

Dear Foundation Staff,

My family moved to Canada from the U.S. in 2006. My three children were born in Florida and I am a returning Canadian.  It has taken me a little while to get to know the medical system.  At the beginning I was overwhelmed, but now with the help and support I have encountered from the staff at Bloorview, life here has become a breeze!!!

My son Dylan has Spina Bifida, attended Bloorview’s March Break Respite camp’s Sports and Spokes Program.  I have never seen him glow so much. He is a quiet boy, very much introverted.   At first, I worried... how was he going to do at camp, communicating with people he had never met. Was he going to have fun? Would he voice his needs?

When I picked him up the first day, I found Dylan with a smile from ear to ear, he told me in detail everything he had done that day. At bedtime he said he couldn't wait to wake up the next morning to go to camp again.  He had never done wheelies before, or played basketball or tennis. He was ecstatic. He was energetic. He was happy and that is the only thing a mother really wants...to see her son absolutely content!!

During camp he discovered that he likes tennis and wants to pursue it.  His confidence level has increased in that one week.  I caught myself fantasizing about such a camp but full-time. Dylan can't wait for next year's camp and neither can I!  I would like to thank the Foundation for helping us financially, for without its support of this program, he would not have had such a priceless experience.  Dylan has made a thank you card, which I will drop off some time soon.

Thank you again,

Brenda (Dylan’s mom)
